D4L FAIR makes research FAIR

D4L FAIR is a metadata management tool enabling research data reuse by making data findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable (FAIR). D4L FAIR creates transparency and connects you with other researchers and across departments, institutes, and geographies.

Benefits of D4L FAIR at a glance

Use metadata to identify and reuse scientific datasets

D4L FAIR is an accurate and easy-to-use search tool that guides you to the dataset you need – by using metadata from complex datasets.

Make research funds more effective and sustainable

Minimize your effort to find and reuse existing data by searching their metadata in D4L FAIR.

Automate data access requests and sharing processes

Get comprehensive workflow support for automating data access requests and data sharing processes.

Comply with the highest security standards

D4L FAIR is a secure solution designed to meet GDPR and HIPAA regulations. It offers flexible deployment options in your private data center or in the cloud to meet your security requirements.

D4L FAIR in action

A visionary cooperation with the Robert Koch Institute

Metadata Exchange (MEx) is an innovative transparency platform developed together with the Robert Koch Institute using D4L FAIR to make research data findable, accessible, interoperable, and ready for reuse.

Frequently asked question

What is D4L FAIR?

D4L FAIR is a platform that enables research data reuse by making data findable, accessible and exchangeable through their metadata.

The D4L FAIR platform is designed to enable researchers to identify and reuse scientific datasets by accessing one central digital metadata catalog. In addition, it will serve as a basis for AI researchers to fully utilize existing information.

Displaying metadata through D4L FAIR will minimize human effort as they will be automatically extracted from existing systems.

What is the added value of D4L FAIR?

The situation in the research environment:

  • Volume and complexity of produced data is increasing exponentially

  • Research data is not always adhering to FAIR principles being findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable

  • Data must be transparently available in order to be reused and unlock its full potential

However, full potential of this heterogeneous landscape can only be achieved with full transparency about the data, processes, platforms and projects.

That’s why we chose to focus on metadata with the goal of full metadata transparency displayed through one interface for all activities within a research institution.

What is Open Science?

More information on the concept of Open Science: data.europa.eu and OpenAIRE.

Does D4L FAIR display research data itself?

D4L FAIR doesn't display the data itself, but refers to the physical location of the data. D4L FAIR only displays metadata about the datasets.

What is metadata?

Metadata is structured information that describes, explains and locates an information source. Thereby making it easier to retrieve, use and manage.

In the context of research data, metadata provides further context into the method of data collection, the person who collected the data and specific keywords around the research field. More details: data.europa.eu.

What is FAIR use of data?

FAIR stands for Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable.

The FAIR data principles need to be better adhered to in order to increase efficiency in long term and reusability of research data. More details: GO FAIR.
